From above, the geometry is almost tender: ice descending in slow procession toward the water it has become, the proglacial lake holding fragments of itself like a mirror that remembers. The rock here is stripped to its oldest grammar, ochre and iron and shadow, the kind of surface that requires millennia to write. Standing water gathers in two pools below, connected by a thin thread of fall, the whole system breathing in a register too slow for a single lifetime to measure. Dirk Collins has spent 30 years finding the places where time makes itself visible. This is one of them.
